Overall, I'd say that the fashion at this year's VMAs was overwhelmingly underwhelming. For an award show that is known for its risque environment, attendees definitely played it safe. (As I write this I wonder if I have become completely desensitized to inappropriate clothing due to the recent requirement for female pop stars to be ridiculously provocative in order to get any media attention). Anyway, that's a conversation for another time. Preceding comment aside, the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards were pretty tame.
Although there were some outliers (I'm looking at you, Amber Rose and Katy Perry), a majority of the red carpet walkers rocked all black ensembles, which I admire immensely. Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus both went the black leather route, with Grande in Moschino and Cyrus in Alexandre Vauthier. And while the former child stars both looked great, I think my favorite looks of the night are Kylie Jenner in Alexandre Vauthier and Solange Knowles in H&M (!??!!). Let's face it; Kylie Jenner killed it in her floor length silk gown with a semi-scandalous slit (she is 17 after all). It's so effortlessly cool, you almost forget that she is a member of the attention seeking Kardashian clan. And Solange always looks chic, but the fact that she a) wore a baggy blazer/pants combo to the VMAs and b) wore H&M, just makes everything ten times better. This is a perfect example of less is more. I think the VMAs are a great place to be trendy. So brava, Kylie and Solange. I approve. Emma Stone must have a spectacular team of stylists, because her red carpet looks for Amazing Spiderman 2 have been on point. The yellow Atelier Versace dress she wore to the London premiere proves once and for all that girls with fair skin and red/blonde hair can totally pull off yellow. At the New York premiere Emma rocked a simple Prada gown, probably to highlight her chic new hair cut. Don't even get me started on her berry colored lipstick. Emma Stone is officially a style icon.
Taylor Swift has had quite the style evolution. From her early days as a teenage princess with curly hair, to her current state of glittery maturity (that sounds like an oxymoron), her transformation is rather noticeable. Not only has her hair transformed beautifully over the past few months from slick straight with bangs, to short layered perfection, but her style just keeps getting better. The sparkly mini she wore for the American Music Awards is literally perfect, especially when combined with her disheveled hair and sexpot eye makeup. But what really caught my attention was her look at the American Country Awards. That skirt paired with that top? LOVE. Good job, Taylor. I applaud you. Can we be friends now?
